Chapter 7

I awoke the next morning, still lying beside Joel. "Good morning," I said with a smile.

"Good morning. Did you sleep well?"

"Better than you could have imagined."

"That's good. I was thinking, before I head to work, we could stop by this breakfast spot in town called Emily's. That way, you'll have something in your stomach before I take you back home."

“That sounds amazing! I don’t know why but I feel like I haven’t eaten in five years.”

“Well we need to fix that," he said laughing. Joel and I went into town and walked into Emily's. The breakfast restaurant boasted a checkered fifties theme that I couldn't resist capturing with my phone. There were white booth seats with a red cushioning on them, neon signs lined up on the walls, and hanging lights above each table. It was undeniably one of those unique spots. We took our seats in a cozy booth towards the back of the restaurant.

“I figured you’d like towards the back better, that way we’re further away from people, and less chance of anxiety," he said, giving me a warm smile.

“Thanks for thinking of me. That means a lot.” After ten minutes passed, a tall waiter with long blonde hair pulled up into a ponytail approached us to take our order. “Do you know what you want yet, or would you like a few more minutes to look over the menu? she asked.

“You ready Maya?”

“Yep. Um, can I have orange juice with a farmer's omelet?”

“Would you like a side of white or wheat toast?” asked the waiter.

“White bread, please.”

“Alrighty, and for you sir?”

“I’ll have orange juice with waffles, sausage, and eggs.”

“Okay, and how would you like your eggs?”

“Sunny side up, please.”

“Would you like links or patties for your sausage?”

“Links.”

“Alrighty, we’ll bring that out to you as soon as it’s ready.”

“Alright, thanks.” It only took about thirty minutes for our food to arrive, which in my book, was pretty good timing. Joel and I ate until we were so full that we couldn't even finish our drinks. As we waited for the check, a tall girl with long black silky hair and grayish-blue eyes walked up to our table. “Hey, Joel! How are you?”

“I’m good, and you?”

“I’m good, just trying to stay warm out here. It was good seeing you again and happy holidays.”

“Happy holidays to you as well!” The women walked out of the door and the waiter came to give us our check. “You ready?” Joel asked.

“Yeah,” I replied, trying not to let the previous encounter bother me. I knew a part of me wanted to ask about who the girl was, but then it would have been obvious that I cared, and I shouldn't have. On the way back to my aunt's, the car ride had been quiet. Finally, Joel said something. “The woman from earlier was one of my clients. She had just moved up here and needed help with her house. It was in terrible shape from the previous owner.”

“Cool," I said because that
